My last day in is the 14th of November, and then I'll be medically discharged for blowing out a couple discs in my back during my last tour in Iraq. Thanks to their piss-poor way of doing things, my Wife & I will essentially be homeless & bankrupt on the 15th.
Why? Because of the privatized-housing for soldiers living on-post.
Because of the lazy & incompetent civilians who work for the Army's "Family/Community" Service.
Because of the convoluted regulations which the Army expects us to know about, but don't inform us about until it's too late.
And because of a chain-of-command that just doesn't give a shit.
In order for us to leave housing, we have to clean it & shampoo the carpets. If the house isn't clean to standard, the housing company charges between $250-$500 for cleaning fees, and up to $1200 for replacement of the carpet. Only there's absolutely NO WAY to clean the house to their approval, and there's NO WAY to avoid being charged for cleaning & carpet replacement.
Example: My Wife & I had cleared housing once before, and we had the entire block in there cleaning & shampooing the carpet. We even were walking around with bags taped over our feet to avoid getting even the smallest bit of dirt on the floors. The inspector came in and reached up behind the false drawer under the kitchen sink, and scraped a finger along the inside ledge. It came out with several year's worth of dust, and therefore pronounced the entire house "filthy". Bam... $500 cleaning fee, which must be paid up-front, otherwise they won't let you clear housing.
This time, the inspector came in and insisted that all of the apartment's (2stry, 2bdrm) carpet must be replaced because we have a cat, to the tune of $1100. Why? Because we have a cat, and there's "cat leavings" in the carpet, even though we shampooed the place.... twice. Plus, our cat doesn't have pee or shit outside of the litterbox, period. Doesn't matter though.... they're gonna gouge us one way or another, and there's no way to avoid it.
Then there's my leave days. In the Army, we can cash-in saved leave days, which is base-pay minus 26% taxes. I've got over 50 days saved up, and during my entire time in the Army I've been told that we can cash-in leave only once per enlistment. I've never done that, so I'm good, right? Wrong. It turns out that you can cash in leave once per enlistment.... but ONLY upon separation or reenlistment. Which screwed us, since there was no way we can afford to pay bills, housing, and whatever else I owe the Army with my regular paycheck, and still have enough left over to get a new apartment. Oh, and speaking of which... My last paycheck isn't being paid to me at the normal time, instead the Army is withholding it until they figure out what we owe them.
All of the Army's financial-aid programs are worthless to me because I'm getting out, and the aid-programs & services run by civilians have continuously ignored our pleas for help. "Deal with it" was even one response I got from a civilian who could've helped waive the deposit-fees on an apartment.
There's a lot more.... but I'm entirely drained from this ordeal.... and am not looking forward to sleeping in my Jeep (which doesn't have heat) during November & December.
